This set of 120 math word problems is perfect for your first grade classroom! The format is SO EASY to use and will give your students the practice they need in solving joining (adding to), separating (taking from), part-part-whole (taking apart and putting together) and compare word problems.

It is aligned to First Grade Common Core Standards. There are enough practice problems for the ENTIRE YEAR!

WORD PROBLEM PAGE COMPONENTS:

Each word problem page is carefully designed to allow students the freedom to solve the problem with a strategy that makes sense to them. However, it also gives students structure to ensure important components are included in their solution.

Each word problem page is divided into 6 sections.
– The word problem is in the center.
– The left hand corner lists word problem types. Students circle the one that matches the problem.
– The “Equation” box is where students write a matching equation (or equations).
– The “Solve and Record” box is where students draw or write how they solved the problem.
– The “Number Bond” box is the place to draw a matching number bond.
– The “Answer” box is for students to write the answer in a complete sentence or a phrase.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Is there a specific order to complete the worksheet sections?

Students are asked to read the problem first and figure out (and circle) the type of problem it is. After that, it is recommended to allow your students to complete the recording sheet in an order that works for them. We have found that some students solve and record their thinking first, others like to write they equation they are going to use, and some like to begin with the number bond.

Should I randomly assign different types of word problems or should I choose specific ones?

If you are using these problems to supplement your math curriculum, it is recommended to follow the sequence of word problems taught in the program. However, you’ll want to mix up the position of the unknown and vary problem types as soon as you can.

If your math curriculum is weak in word problem instruction, it is recommended to begin with joining problems, then introduce separating, part-part-whole, and, finally, compare.

How often should these problems be assigned?

Daily practice is ideal, but we all know that can be difficult to make happen. We shoot for 3 to 5 practice problems per week.
